Why I care...aka why I did this project in the first place
There are many reasons to why I chose to research the topic of censorship and more specifically the censorship of teenage pregnancy articles, but first and foremost, I chose this topic because I felt a personal connection to the topic. In High School, my best friend was a part of the high school newspaper and while at first I didn't really pay much attention to the newspaper in general, and usually just ignored her complaining, it all changed when she wrote an article on teenage pregnancy that was censored. I remember her calling me so upset about what was going on, and while I tried to sympathize with her, the truth was I just didn't really know the extent of the problem she was dealing with. So I did a little research, and realized that censorship was becoming a greater concern in high schools, and as she dealt with the predicament I learned more and more what it meant to have an article censored. I began to feel a personal connection to the matter, as though I was almost the one going through it all, and by the end after everything was resolved I realized that censorship was a topic that needed to be addressed. In my opinion, high school censorship should not occur unless there is a true legitimate pedagogical concern, not because a topic seems to be too controversial. Therefore, I do not believe that articles regarding teenage pregnancy should be censored, for I do not see the problem with these articles. As I realize through my research, and the countless interviews I did, there are very different views on whether or not the topic should be censored, and while I understand the views of those who do believe the topic to be too mature for a high school audience, I also cannot say that I agree with it. As I and others pointed out, teenage pregnancy, and many of the other issues being censored are issues that are directly relevant to high school students, and these issues should be addressed.
